Liverpool can pile the pain on United

If there’s one fixture Manchester United fans look for when the fixtures are released before the start of the season, it’s this one – Manchester United v Liverpool.
The fixture has thrown up some incredibly fiery matches in the past, with neither one of the bitter rivals wanting to be on the end of a defeat.
But their clash on October 20 has taken on extra significance this season. United are, incredibly, just two points clear of the relegation zone, while unbeaten Liverpool are flying at the top of the table. United boss Ole Ginnar Solskjaer, if you believe some reports, is also teetering on the brink of the sack.
Let’s have a look if his side can save him…

Who has history on their side?

If we have a look at the past five Premier League fxtures between the pair, these results have occurred:

  • Man Utd v Liverpool – 1-1 (Jan 2017)
  • Liverpool v Man Utd – 0-0 (Oct 2017)
  • Man Utd Liverpool – 2-1 (Mar 2018)
  • Liverpool v Man Utd – 3-1 (Dec 2018)
  • Man Utd v Liverpool – 0-0 (Feb 2019)

So, a win a piece for each, and three draws – not much to separate them there, then. But what are the bookies saying?

Liverpool are favourites…

The draw might have been the most popular result over the past five results, but it’s the longest result odds for 888Sport, at 3/1. Man United are 10/3 to win, with Liverpool clear favourites at 3/4.

Red hot trio are short odds

So confident is 888Sport that a Liverpool player will score first, it has FIVE Liverpool players at shorter odds than the first United player (Marcus Rashford at 15/2). Mo Salah is favourite at 4/1, Sadio Mane is 19/4 and Roberto Firminho is 27/5. Incredibly, 888Sport thinks Divock Origi, also 27/5, and Rhian Brewster (6/1) will score first.

Goals galore?

What’s interesting is the two 0-0 draws in the last five matches have kept the total goals per game ratio down. There have been nine goals in the last five games, four coming in one match.
If you think there will be under 2.5 goals in this fixture, 888Sport offers 21/20. But with Salah, Mane and Firminho in form, and United more than capable of goals, over 2.5 goals at 3/4 could be an option.
Either way, we reckon it’s going to be another fiery one!
