The group stages of this season’s Champions League get underway this evening and tomorrow (October 20 and 21) and there are some exciting games to look forward to. Bayern Munich and Manchester City head the market as favourites to lift the trophy with 888sport offering odds of 4/1 for Bayern to defend their title, whilst City are priced at 9/2 to win the tournament for the first time in their history.
Bayern Munich face a difficult opening game against Atletico
Bayern won the Champions League last season after beating PSG 1-0 in the final thanks to a Kingsley Coman header. They had also previously beaten Barcelona 8-2 in a sensational quarter final. They begin the defence of their title against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid at the Allianz Arena and they are strong favourites at 1/2 with 888sport to win their opening game of Group A.
It won’t be easy though as Atletico are strong defensively and the draw is priced at 10/3. These two clubs last met in the competition in 2016 in the group stages, with each side winning their home fixture 1-0.
City start against Portuguese champions
Manchester City will start their bid to win a first Champions League crown at home against FC Porto. Pressure continues to build on Pep Guardiola to deliver this trophy to the Etihad Stadium, but they have so far never got past the quarter final stage.
City are favourites to beat Porto at 1/4 with 888sport, with the Portuguese champions priced at a tempting 19/2 to win in Manchester. The clubs have never met in the Champions League but did face each other in the group stages of the Europe League in 2012, with City winning both home and away fixtures.
Liverpool travel to Amsterdam
Champions League winners in 2019, Liverpool begin their campaign in Amsterdam against Ajax. The Reds failed to reach the quarter finals last season as they attempted to win back-to-back European titles, but did go on to win the Premier League. Ajax, who had reached the semi finals in 2019, failed to get out of the group stages last season.
Liverpool are favourites with 888sport to win at the Johan Cruijff Arena, even without Virgil van Dijk, with the hosts priced at 19/4 to make a winning start in Group D. This is the first meeting in the Champions League between these two famous clubs.
Manchester United dealt a tough opening game
Manchester United travel to France to face last seasons beaten finalists, PSG, in what is a tough opening Group H game. This will be the third meeting between the clubs in the Champions League after United knocked PSG out of the competition in 2019 on the away goal rule to progress to the quarter finals.
PSG are favourites to get this season’s campaign off to a winning start at 11/20 with 888sport, who price United at 9/2 to secure another notable win at the Parc des Princes.
