There were two recent sackings in the Premier League, as Aston Villa surprisingly parted company with Dean Smith, while Norwich City decided to sack Daniel Farke, just hours after the Canaries secured their first win of the Premier League season.
Who will be next in the Villa Park hotseat?
Dean Smith was appointed as manager of Aston Villa in October 2018 and went on to take the club from 14th in the Championship to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2019. He then took Villa to the 2020 EFL Cup Final, where they lost to Manchester City, and this season the Villains sat 16th in the top-flight when Smith was given the axe after five straight defeats.
It appears now that Steven Gerrard is the number one choice to replace Smith.
Villa CEO, Christian Puslow, who knows Gerrard from his time at Liverpool, is keen to secure the services of the former England star, who has made a name for himself as a manager in Scotland at Rangers, after they ended Celtic’s near decade-long dominance of the Scottish Premiership.
Gerrard is now the strong 1/10 favourite with Unibet to be appointed as Villa’s next manager if personal terms can be agreed.
Who else is in the running for the Villa top job?
Other names who have been mentioned as possible successors to Smith include Belgian national coach, Roberto Martinez. The Spaniard might be lured back to the Premier League at a club such as Villa and has been priced as the 11/1 second favourite to take the top job at Villa Park.
Frank Lampard, who was sacked by Chelsea last season is also priced at 11/1, while Nuno Espirito Santo, who was recently sacked by Tottenham Hotspur, has been priced at 16/1.
Why are Norwich looking for a new manager?
Daniel Farke was appointed as the head coach at Norwich City in 2017 and guided the Canaries to the Championship title in his second full season.
However, they were instantly relegated from the Premier League in their first season back in the top-flight. The following season saw Norwich win the Championship title again with a record 97 points and return to the EPL.
But the Carrow Road side have been struggling again this season and sat bottom of the table when Farke was dismissed having gained just two points from their opening 10 games. Norwich finally won their first game of the season at the weekend, but the damage was done and the German was shown the door.
Who are the candidates to take over at Carrow Road?
Frank Lampard has been installed as the current favourite to take over the Carrow Road hot seat, with Unibet making him the Evens money favourite.
Lampard enjoyed a good spell with Derby County in the Championship two seasons ago, guiding them to the play-offs. It was that spell that convinced Chelsea to offer him the top job at Stamford Bridge, but after a run of disappointing results, Lampard was sacked by the Blues, and he has been looking to get back into a managerial role ever since.
Dean Smith, recently sacked by Aston Villa, is an interesting candidate after getting Villa promoted from the Championship two years ago, and he has recently become free. Unibet have priced him at 5/1 to replace Farke in Norfolk.
One name that might be new to people is Kjetil Knutsen, who is the head coach of Eliteserien side, Bodø/Glimt in Norway. Last year he led them to a first ever Norwegian national league title, in a record-breaking season where they lost just one game. Unibet have him priced as the 5/2 second favourite for the job.
The main candidates for the Norwich City job include:
- Frank Lampard
- Kjetil Knutsen
- Dean Smith
- Christophe Pelissier
- Hannes Wolf
- Diego Martinez
- Luis Boa Morte
- Russell Martin
- Roy Hodgson
